Bulletin board at The Sacred Grounds Cafe on Hayes Street in San Francisco.
Community bulletin boards are a service provided by the generous business owners or public agencies who host them. When posting, a little courtesy goes a long way. Here's how to be a good neighbor (poster):
1. Ask Permission First
When appropriate, check with the business owner or staff before posting. Some businesses have rules or restrictions on what you can post.
2. Stick to Designated Areas
Only post where it’s clearly allowed—on bulletin boards or designated walls, windows—not just any surface.
3. Use Smaller Sizes
Avoid full-page or poster-sized flyers. Postcard-sized or something similar work best and leave room for everyone.
4. Don’t Cover Other Flyers
Never place your flyer over someone else’s. If possible, rearrange the board to make room for yours without overlapping others.
5. Remove Expired Flyers
If you see an outdated or expired flyer—especially for past events—feel free to take it down to make space for new ones.
6. One Copy Is Enough
Don't clutter the board with duplicates. A single, well-placed flyer is more respectful and just as effective.
7. Don’t Use a Stapler on Cork Boards
Use push pins instead. Staples can damage the board and make it harder to use for others.
8. Use Tape Sparingly
If you're using tape, go easy. Excessive tape can damage surfaces and leave a mess for the business owner to clean.
9. Bring Your Own Supplies
The business owner is providing a valuable service by putting up the bulletin board—don’t burden them with more asks. Bring your own push pins or tape.
Thanks for helping keep our community boards clean, fair, and welcoming!
